Essential Functions:

  • Supervise small group discussions.

  • Assist with individual students during in-class activities.

  • Will interact with students one-on-one or in small groups of 2-3 students.

  • Mentor and assist special needs students.

  • Conduct topic and material research to aid with lesson and activity planning.

  • Help facilitate learning activities.

  • Assist with lesson and activity planning and preparation. Collaborate with the teacher to brainstorm planning ideas.

  • Collaborate with teachers on ideas and strategies to help struggling learners.

  • Help keep work areas neat and organized to promote a positive image.  Use appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and beliefs and follow the operating procedures and policies of Iowa City Community School District.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Skills/Knowledge:  Ability to follow instructions.  Must have strong organizational and communication skills, and be a team player.  Must be detail-oriented.  Professional and trustworthy conduct is required.  Must be courteous and respectful. 

  • Must be a high school student in good standing.  Must be poised, mature, and possess a positive attitude while being flexible.

  • Love to work with all walks and levels of students.

  • Compassionate, patient, kind to all.

  • Business casual attire is required.

  • Must be self-motivated and willing to actively participate.

  • Must be interested in pursuing a degree or career in Education

This description does not list all duties. The teaching assistant may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor. The intern assistant will be evaluated on the performance of the projects listed as well as interaction with employees and clients. On-site hours will be negotiated with each candidate.
