Office Hours: 7:30-3:30, M-F

One of Iowa’s largest contiguous farms, the Amana Farms is made up of 26,000 acres with award-winning crop fields, a 2,000 cow/calf herd, a 4,000 head cattle feedlot, an anaerobic digester, and Iowa’s largest privately held forest.

Job Summary

Interns participate in various tasks relating to crop production and maintenance as well as livestock support. These positions require a strong work ethic, mindfulness, and a passion for agriculture. All Team Members, including Interns, contribute to the success of Amana Farms.

Interns take guidance from Full Time Crop Operations Team Members and/or Feedlot Associates as needed. They report to the Manager of whichever department they are tasked with supporting during a given shift. Through their participation in several areas at Amana Farms, Interns learn to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic environment. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in feeding animals, pen cleaning, preparing bedding, and general care of animals.
  • Assist in maintaining fencing and building sites.
  • Refuel and maintain tractors, implements, and other company vehicles as required.
  • Drive and operate farm machinery and equipment safely and efficiently, including tractors, trucks, and implements.
  • Assist in proper record keeping as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment throughout the operation.
  • Take part in learning opportunities in all divisions of Amana Farms; participate in learning opportunities with other Amana Society businesses as they are available.
  • Assist in all areas of the operation to help ensure the success of Amana Farms, Inc.

 

Requirements

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be a senior or rising senior and have a valid Iowa driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) regularly and occasionally lift objects (up to 50 pounds) above shoulder height.
  • Stamina to work long hours outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Physical dexterity and coordination to operate farm machinery and hand tools safely; good vision and hearing for monitoring crop health and operating machinery safely.  
  • Positive attitude and the ability to follow the Core Values of Amana Farms.


Work Environment

  • This position involves lifting, bending, walking and standing for extended periods; tasks may involve crawling, stooping, kneeling, and twisting.
  • Work is often performed in a dusty and loud environment.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required as job duties demand. 

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
