Intern Title: Environmental Education Intern

DEFINITION AND DUTIES:

Under general supervision of the Naturalists, the intern shall conduct maintenance of live animal displays, bird blind, nature center, and curation.  Duties may also include assisting in conservation/environmental education programming for the Johnson County Conservation and assisting conservation staff with work activities and special projects.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Interest and knowledge of flora, fauna, and ecosystems, especially those in Iowa and on the land owned by Johnson County and managed by the Conservation Board
  • English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary and punctuation skills.
  • Ability to:
  • Learn, apply, and articulate departmental policies and procedures
  • Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner
  • Communicate and work well with persons of various age groups representing diverse backgrounds
  • Work in all types of weather conditions
  • Collect data, keep accurate records, and prepare reports
  • Use a computer for purposes of data entry and word processing
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Handle low to moderate levels of stress and solve problems appropriate to the position
  • Have clarity of speech, hearing, and writing which permits effective communication
  • Stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, squat, bend, twist, reach, and crawl
  • Have sufficient vision which permits keen observation as well as production and review of materials in electronic and hardcopy form
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds
  • SPECIFIC DUTIES: to be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Care for live education animals by providing appropriate food, clean water, and clean bedding.
  • Cleaning and filling bird feeders at the bird blind. Keeping the bird blind maintained and tidy.
  • Input inventory into museum grade curation software.
  • Assist in preparing educational materials.
  • Work with and provide back-up for the lead Naturalist when hosting education programming.
  • Attend work-related meetings and training sessions as requested.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with JCCB policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.

 

THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.
