The Center for Worker Justice Integrative Field Intern:

The Center for Worker Justice is an organization that works to unite low-wage workers in Eastern Iowa across race and immigration status to achieve social and economic justice through education, direct service, and community alliances. We are looking for an Integrative Volunteer Intern who is passionate about social justice, civil rights, affordable housing, and universal accessibility to community resources to help improve Eastern Iowa communities.

 

Objectives of this Role 

·        Explore social and economic issues through the first-hand perspective of low-income and global-majority population members of the community

·        Develop professional, helping relationships with community members to provide safe and inviting access to advocacy and community resources

·        Assist in the efficient operation of the organization and administration of services to clients

·        Foster cooperation between a multilingual and multiracial coalition of interdisciplinary staff members and clients


Daily Responsibilities
 

·        Work closely with CWJ staff, clients, and other interns to plan and develop work plans and schedules for new initiatives

·        Serve as Point-of-Contact between staff, walk-in clients, and other external parties utilizing the services of The Center for Worker Justice

·        Manage information intake and documentation in an organized, timely, and accurate manner

·        Overseeing clerical tasks

·        Assist with the upkeep and organization of staff calendars and up-coming meetings

·        Ensure that office supplies and other expendable materials are kept in stock and available to CWJ staff.

·        Scribe accurate and thorough notes during and after meetings, events, and/or sessions with clients.

·        Screen and direct phone calls and distribute correspondence

·        Organize and maintain the office filing system

·        Assist with campaign execution and task distribution as needed


Skills and Qualifications

·        Effective written and verbal communication skills

·        Ability and willingness to learn new tasks, follow directions and work independently when needed

·        Reasonable time management and ability to adhere to committed work schedule

·        Excellent organizational skills

·        Basic understanding of social issues and basic ethics

·        Willingness and enthusiasm to work with people of all ages, identities, ethnicities, and socio-economic classes

·        Drive to learn more about social issues, community organizing, workers’ rights, access to housing, and immigration issues  

 

Preferred Qualifications

·        Multilingual Communication Skills

       - Special interest in Spanish, French, and/or Arabic speakers

·        Education and/or Experience managing Social Media, Digital Presence, and/or other avenues of Advertising/Marketing.

·        Experience in Community Organizing, Social Service, Customer Service, and/or Public Non-Profit work.  

·        Experience researching social issues and/or the efficacy of social programs

·        Experience writing grants

 

This description does not list all duties. Intern may be asked to perform other duties by the staff or supervisor. Intern will be evaluated on performance of the projects listed as well as interaction with employees and clients. On-site hours will be negotiated with each candidate.
